In 1971, Professor Roger Short made a short film about William Harvey's view of generation, focusing on his dissection of a pregnant hind, which is described in the pages of Harvey's 1651 masterpiece "De Generatione Animalium".

The film, entitled "Harvey's Conception", was made with the Edinburgh University Film Unit, and was supported by the Royal Society.

The film, which lasts 15 minutes, forms a fantastic supplement to the material in my book, in particular the description of Harvey's work in Chapter 1. It gives a powerful impression of the difficulties faced by 17th century scientists in trying to understand how new life is created.

Roger Short has very kindly provided me with a copy of the film, and allowed me to put electronic versions of it on this website, where it can be downloaded. However, it should not be distributed further without the written approval of Professor Short. Contact him here.

There are three versions of varying sizes – click on the one you require. Please note, downloading may take some time, depending on the speed of your connection to the internet.

The films are all in Quicktime format. You can get a free Quicktime player here, which will run on whatever kind of computer you have.
